The GHS Weekly – Student & Family Edition
Week of May 10, 2026 • Principal: Brian Jandreau
A Message for our Mothers & Caregivers
Happy Mother’s Day! To all the mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers who support our students every day: thank you. We hope you had a restful weekend and felt the deep appreciation our entire GHS community has for the work you do.
Safety Reminder: Student Dismissals
To ensure the safety of all our students, please remember that any student needing to leave campus during the school day must be dismissed through the main office by a parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to leave campus on their own unless they have pre-determined privileges to do so. Thank you for helping us keep GHS safe and accountable.
Career X & Future Planning
Career X – Social Studies (May 27–28)
This week, students in grades 9-11 will be signing up for interactive workshops with professionals in law, finance, filmmaking, and more. This program helps students see the "real world" application of their Social Studies curriculum. Ask your student which workshop they chose!
Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) for 2026-2027
We have an incredible 215 students interested in ELOs for next year! There is a mandatory scheduling meeting for these students this Thursday, May 14, during the school day. Please check in with your student to ensure they attend.
Student Spotlight: Senior Experience Art Show
As part of their Senior Experiences, two of our talented seniors are hosting a public art show to showcase their hard work and creativity. We are incredibly proud of the initiative they’ve taken to organize this event from the ground up!
Please consider stopping by to celebrate their artistic achievements and see the results of their professional exploration. Let’s show our students the strength of the GHS staff community by supporting their passions!
Technology Update: A Common Sense Approach
Superintendent Perry recently shared an update regarding the state-mandated "bell-to-bell" cell phone ban starting this fall. GHS is committed to a "common sense" implementation. We will not be using locking pouches; instead, we will focus on clear communication and helping students understand the educational benefits of a phone-free learning environment.
Navigating the Future: AI at GHS
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, Gorham Schools is committed to a proactive and ethical approach that prepares our students for a digital future while keeping human relationships at the center of learning. We want to ensure students and families have clear guidance on how to use these tools responsibly.
To support this, we utilize two key frameworks to help students make informed decisions:
1. The AI Use Zones
Not every assignment is intended to be completed the same way. We use a "Zone" system to communicate exactly how much AI input is appropriate for a specific task:
Zone 1: Student Creation – The task is completed independently with no AI input.
Zone 2: AI Clarification – AI is used only to define terms or break down instructions into steps.
Zone 3: AI Ideation – AI helps brainstorm ideas, but the student generates all final content.
Zone 4: AI Collaboration – The student creates a first draft, uses AI for feedback, and then completes the work.
Zone 5: AI Evaluation – AI produces most of the product, which the student then evaluates and personalizes.
Zone 6: AI Application – Students use AI to build complex presentations, videos, or designs to demonstrate mastery.
2. The "Before You Use AI" Checklist
We encourage students to ask themselves several critical questions before engaging with AI tools to ensure they are protecting their privacy and their academic integrity:
Learning First: Am I using AI to help me learn or just to avoid the work? Does this final product still reflect my own voice?
Safety & Privacy: Am I protecting my own personal information and the privacy of others? Is the tool I am using school-approved?
Critical Thinking: Have I checked the AI’s response for accuracy or bias? Does the information it gave me actually make sense?
Transparency: Would I be comfortable telling my teacher or my parents exactly how I used AI for this?
Next Steps
The district is currently refining the Student AI Handbook based on feedback from over 100 families. We will be hosting student focus groups on May 18 to ensure student perspectives are included before the handbook is finalized this June.
We invite you to review the latest draft of the handbook D1 Gorham Schools Student/Family AI Handbook and reach out with any questions as we work together to "Prepare and Inspire" our students in this new digital landscape.
