I am incredibly proud to announce that 16 of our upper-level Latin students have met the requirements for the Maine Seal of Biliteracy! Health & Wellness: Free Physicals & Medical Care
Through a partnership with Convenient MD, we have vouchers available for free youth physicals (bypassing the standard $40 copay). We also partner with Maine Medical Partners to help students establish long-term care, including sick visits and mental health support. If transportation is a barrier, they can even provide Uber assistance for appointments. Please reach out to Nurse Homan for more information.
Legislative Update: State-Mandated “Bell-to-Bell” Device Ban
As many of you may have seen in recent news regarding Governor Mills’s approved budget, the state legislature has included a requirement for a “Bell-to-Bell” electronic device ban across all Maine public schools. This mandate must be in place by August 1, 2026.
What this means for GHS: We have been anticipating this shift, which is why we paused our local policy revisions earlier this year. We are currently awaiting a template policy from the Maine School Management Association (MSMA) and the Maine Department of Education (MDOE).
Our Approach: Superintendent Perry has shared that our district intends to take a “minimalistic” approach to this requirement.
No Pouches: We do not intend to implement systems like "Yonder pouches" or other high-intervention storage locks.
Clear Expectations: Our philosophy will treat cell phones similarly to other prohibited items (like tobacco or alcohol). We will simply state that they are not allowed in schools during the instructional day and manage expectations from that baseline.
We wanted to give you this "heads up" now so you are aware of the coming changes. We will share the draft policy with you as soon as it is available. Stay tuned for more details as we work to meet this state requirement in a way that best fits the culture of Gorham High School.
Student/Family AI Handbook
The first draft of the Student/Family AI Handbook is now available. It centers on the H.U.M.A.N. framework (Halt, Understand, Moderate, Augment, Notice). While the staff version is coming this fall, please preview the D1 Gorham Schools Student/Family AI Handbook to see our guiding commitments.
