Updated CDC Guidance for Respiratory Infections

Gorham School District follows CDC Guidance for Respiratory Infections


CDC guidance for common respiratory viral illnesses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).

Common symptoms of a respiratory virus include:

Cough, Wheezing, Chest Discomfort

Fever, Feeling Feverish or Chills

Sore Throat

Decreased Appetite, Diarrhea, Vomiting

Fatigue (tiredness), Weakness

Headache, Muscle or Body Aches

Runny or Stuffy Nose, Sneezing

New Loss of Taste or Smell

*a person may experience other symptoms in addition to above


  • Stay Home:
    • You develop symptoms of respiratory virus.
    • Call your health care provider for guidance if you have concerns or questions about your symptoms. If symptoms become severe (difficulty breathing, chest pain, etc) seek emergency medical care. 
  • Return to School:
    • Symptoms improving for at least 24 hours.

AND

  • No fever without using fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours.

Respiratory viruses may continue to spread following the immediate improvement of symptoms. Take additional steps for next 5 days to prevent spread by:

  • Ventilating indoor spaces with outside air or using an indoor air purifier.
  • Covering your coughs and sneezes.
  • Handwashing or using hand sanitizer.
  • Masking.
  • Physically distancing yourself from others.
  • Testing for respiratory viruses if you will be around other people indoors.

It is recommended to get yearly flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Some individuals at higher risk may need additional vaccines, talk to your health care provider for a complete list of recommended immunizations.
