The traditional school counselor who managed all the activities of their caseload as "generalists" in their profession have had their roles changed to be more "specialists" in three major areas of service that counselors provide to help students succeed and schools operate.

Post-Secondary Specialist -   Phyllis Worthley

This person supports students and provides the college and career services and activities for Gorham High School.  Some examples include:

  • Junior College Visit to UNH
  • College Admissions Night
  • Send transcript materials to colleges
  • Track post secondary plans of seniors and graduates
 
Assessment, Placement, and Support Specialist  -   Betsy Anastasoff  &  Kate Stevens

Two specialists provide support in areas concerning courses and academic planning.  They also facilitate school wide testing and extra academic opportunities for students.  Some examples include:

  • Coordinate Virtual High School (VHS)
  • Help with schedule conflicts
  • Social and emotional support for 10-12 graders
  • AP, SAT, and NWEA Testing
  • 504 coordination
  • Coordinate with career and technical schools
 
Transition Specialist (8th-9th grade)  -  Anna Peterson

This individual helps both 8th and 9th grade students make the transition to high school.  They support students and activities related to the transition process.  Some examples include:

  • Facilitate four-year planning
  • Social and emotional support for 9th Graders
  • 8th Parent Night, Step-Up Day
  • Register 8/9 grade students at GHS
  • Liaison between middle and high school
